Highlights from 2023's Summit .

“Attending this event gives freelancers an unfair advantage. Where else can you get two days of access to top editors, inspiring speakers, practical panels and the chance to forge friendships with like-minded writers?”

Lindy Alexander

This was only ever going to be a one-off...

But there’s something kind of lovely and life-changing about:

  • Creating a professional event for writers like us
  • Everybody loving it (and telling you so on ALL the socials)
  • Being bugged (endlessly) to do another one.

So yup. Back by popular demand – Summit 2024!

New around here? A bit of background: the Summit was born out of The Content Byte podcast, co-hosted by us – Lynne Testoni and Rachel Smith. We’re two senior writers dedicated to bringing you the brightest minds across journalism, content and copywriting.

Expect incredible, info-packed presentations and panel discussions, designed to leave you scribbling a HEAP of notes.

Then in the breaks and at the nightly get-togethers, mingle with speakers, panellists and friendly fellow Summiters. It’s your time to debrief, enjoy deeper chats, and build relationships that’ll lead to support, referrals and opportunities for the years to come.

There’s NEVER been a more important time to do this, in person, with freelance writers like you. (Slightly dramatic, but true.)

summit speakers for 2023

The brightest minds in the room

Last year’s Summit got a lot of attention – for its inspiring speakers, whip-smart panel discussions, and takeaways you could apply right away to your own business.

Our speakers and panellists covered content strategy as a service, how to stand out in an AI world, nailing the pitch and escaping the low-pay cycle. They shared how editors can stay ahead of the game, how we can look differently at AI apps, and the tricks to better storytelling. Attendees learned a heap of ways to find work, how to be more business-minded – and why diversifying with podcasting, coaching and writing books could be so powerful.

Just look at those movers and shakers – Ed Gandia, Jennifer Goforth Gregory and many local legends in the media, content and copywriting worlds. Together, they brought a deep collective wisdom and knowledge that’ll be hard to beat.

But what the heck, we’ll give it a crack.

Not sure if you want to take our word for it? Smart.

Kind words from 2023 peeps .

“The Summit is going to change a lot of people’s businesses.”
Debbie Elkind
“I haven’t really attended anything quite like this before and I felt like it was all valuable. It’s propelled me forward in my understanding of lots of things. I didn’t feel like there was any deadweight at all. Such a good venue, good food and good vibes. I know this was a lot of work to pull off – and I’m feeling very grateful for it. Priceless.”
Helen Dehen
“Definitely more relaxed than others I’ve attended – and it didn’t feel like a peacock show which can often happen at conferences. Freelancers from every level of experience could attend and feel included and not intimidated. So glad I flew from Melbourne to see it all in person.”
Aleczander Gamboa
“The only business development event I’ve booked on impulse and with no regrets.”
Ellen Hill
“How did you get so many fab people in a room? So excited for my business future!”
Emma Lovell
“Not a single session was boring or irrelevant.”
Alison Hill
“Attending the Summit has been one of the best things I’ve done as a freelance writer and potentially transformative for my business model. Should the truly remarkable Rachel Smith and Lynne Testoni decide to make this an annual event, it’d be a serious error for any freelance writing creative to miss it.”
Steve Colquhoun
“Such a valuable event. My notebook is full of ideas and actions as a result.”
Erin Huckle
“This is – hands-down – the best conference I’ve ever been to. Not just compared with other writer conferences, but everything.”
Carolyn Tate
“I used to attend a food writers symposium in the US and it felt very similar: small, hyper focused, senior/pro audience. Lots of networking, making friends. I credit [that symposium] with getting a book deal and breaking into The Washington Post. The Summit felt similar in how it brought together very high-quality people. A couple of sessions really kicked me in the ass – in a good way!”
Eagranie Yuh
“Friendly, collegial vibe with top notch speakers and sessions. I now know even more that I need to invest in me and my business.”
Vivienne Pearson
“You guys set a high standard and you’ve created a unique space in the industry with the Summit. Everyone was so welcoming, the program was put together thoughtfully and the questions asked were so amazing, I really got a lot out of every session. That made the price of the ticket worth it”
Rashida Tayabali
